The Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Bill gained Royal assent on 26th June 2020, following years of campaign to remove the need to blame when seeking to divorce in order to allow for no-fault divorce.

The no-fault divorce was due to be implemented in the autumn of 2021.  However, in June 2021 it was announced that the Government commits to 6th April 2022 for the introduction of the Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Act.

The date is later than originally indicated, it is anticipated that the delay will allow time for HMCTS to make changes to the online Divorce systems and guidelines.  The new date is now fixed as a matter of parliamentary record, rather than the previous timetable.  Despite the delay, it has now become a certainty that the introduction of this important reform will be going ahead.  This news will put clients at ease knowing that it is a working progress, and they can be advised accordingly.

The Government remain fully committed to bringing the Act into force.  We will continue to lookout for information regarding the implementation date as it approaches, and we will continue to inform clients of progress and developments.
